Shopping in North Pantanal
There is great shopping in the Pantanal. You won't have to look far to find the perfect Pantanal souvenir, as most of the North Pantanal hotels have their own in-house trinket shops. These shops come well stocked and cater to most travellers' needs. For those willing to travel further, there are also other places for shopping in Cuiabá.
Shopaholics should head to the Pantanal Shopping Mall, which is considered one of the biggest malls in Brazil!
To find out the best places to shop and what to buy whilst in the North Pantanal, read our Pantanal Norte Shopping Guide below, where we provide further information on what to buy in Brazil. Whilst finding that perfect souvenir or picking up a bargain, you should also enjoy a great local meal at one of the appetising North Pantanal restaurants.
Brazilian Souvenirs
What makes a good souvenir to buy in Brazil? Some vouch for indigenous, handmade crafts, while others prefer local goods and musical instruments. Brazil, just like any other major tourist destination, has its own mish-mash of glitzy, modern glass-fronted malls and the quintessential street shops. From premium brands at the malls to corner shops hawking bootlegged CDs at a ‘bargain price' of US $3, you can do the rounds of all.
Brazil's musical heritage has evolved into many varieties of percussion, wind and string instruments. Musical instruments from Brazil make for good take-home gifts. Budget versions can often be found at local craft stores or musical shops.
Each region has spawned its own culture of art. Salvador and nearby Cachoeira are renowned for their rough-hewn wood sculptures. Artists from Ceara are famed for producing fine lace. Artisans from the interior of Pernambuco, in particular Caruaru, are celebrated for their creative ceramic figurines.
Candomble stores are a trove of curios from the mundane to the bizarre, including magical incense for increased sexual allure, wisdom and health to amulets and Afro-Brazilian deity statues.
Gemstones and jewellery offer sound value and come in a wide variety of quality and prices. Art, antiques and home décor are of good quality and unique style. If you are heading to Rio, then have a look at the latest fashions and accessories, as well as the locally made leather goods. In São Paulo, go for the beautiful fabrics.
Shopping Malls
Cuiabá's main commercial district, the Centro, is around the Praça da República. Here along the streets you will find the usual wares from clothing to stationery and toiletries. There are three prominent shopping malls in North Pantanal (see below for more information).
